The Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) has partnered with AccorHotels to offer a new Indigenous Scholarship to prospective students.

AccorHotels employee, Edith Smyth from ibis Styles in Geraldton, was recently announced as the first recipient of the scholarship, which will give her the chance to complete the BMIHMS Diploma of Business (International Hotel and Resort Management).

Edith said she was thrilled to have been announced as the inaugural recipient of the scholarship.

“This scholarship is valuable to me as I want to be an inspiration for young Indigenous people to believe in themselves and realise that hospitality can open the door to an amazing career. BMIHMS gives students the chance to get real, hands on experience and gain valuable industry knowledge. Completing this course will help me advance in the hospitality industry.

“I have many aspirations to work my way up through the channels of management and become a General Manager one day and to show people that dreams are possible if you work hard and take every opportunity that comes your way. I’m so grateful to AccorHotels and BMIHMS for this incredible opportunity,” she said.

AccorHotels Chief Operating Office, Simon McGrath, said of the partnership:
“AccorHotels is committed to empowering Indigenous Australians to become leaders in the hospitality industry and is excited to be offering an Indigenous scholarship with our long standing partners, BMIHMS.”

BMIHMS General Manager, Jerome Casteigt, concurred, saying:

“We’re genuinely excited by this partnership. We have worked with Accor for many years now and we know their employees are incredibly talented and enthusiastic about the industry.

“This is a unique opportunity for Indigenous working professionals who have proven their passion and dedication to the industry and are seeking formal qualifications to take their hotelier career to the next level,” he said.

The one-year diploma is comprised of six months at the BMIHMS Leura Campus and six months in industry placement. During the six months at Leura, BMIHMS will cover full tuition, food and board for the recipient.

AccorHotels will cover all reasonable travel expenses and will also guarantee casual work at the Fairmont Resort as appropriate in accordance with the Scholarship Holder’s Diploma timetable and coursework. AccorHotels will also coordinate the industry placement for the recipient.
