BMIHMS STUDENT PLACES THIRD AT PASSION 4 HOSPITALITY

BMIHMS at Torrens University student Jovanie Tuguinay has placed third in the Hotel, Operations, Tactics and Strategy (HOTS) business game competition at the 2016 Passion 4 Hospitality event in the UK.

 HOTS is a business management training simulation taught at BMIHMS that is based on the redevelopment and management of a large hotel. It is an internationally regarded tool for teaching hotel operations and revenue management.

Jovanie was invited to London as a finalist for the HOTS competition in March along with teams of hospitality students from all over the world. Participants competed against rival teams using the interactive hospitality simulation program to manage a virtual hotel business, which involved making successful business decisions in all operational areas.

BMIHMS flew Jovanie over for the competition on March 14, where she placed third – a particularly notable achievement considering she participated individually, while all of her competitors participated within teams.

BMIHMS at Torrens Dean of Hospitality, Dr Scott Richardson, said:

“This is an incredible achievement and we’re so proud of Jovanie. Our students are a highly motivated and hardworking group so it’s wonderful to be able to support them in these endeavours.

“We’re always encouraging them to push the boundaries and get involved in industry events and competitions like this, and we pride ourselves on offering hands on experience in terms of our course content. HOTS gives students real insight into what it’s like to manage a hotel, and they are involved in every aspect of this, from operations to revenue management and marketing.

“This is one of the reasons why 95% of our graduates find full time employment within 3 months of graduating from BMIHMS; we make sure they have practical experience and access to industry opportunities that will ensure they are work ready upon graduation,” he said.

Jovanie said of the experience:

“For me, HOTS is an avenue where you are able to create decisions as a manager and give life to a hotel. It also gives you a better view of how key operational and managerial decisions are made. You also get the change to review and make changes where improvement is needed.

HOTS has definitely made me a better decision maker, helping me to detect and react to opportunities that I’ll likely be faced with in the real world.

It will take me years before I can really manage my own hotel, but with HOTS it has been such a great feeling to be able to manage a hotel (starting with 200 rooms) on my own. I would strongly recommend this course to anyone who envisions a future in hospitality management,” she said.

P4H was developed by the Institute of Hospitality as part of its drive towards engagement with its Education Membership Scheme (EMS) members. The Institute of Hospitality is the professional body for individual managers and aspiring managers working and studying in the hospitality, leisure and tourism (HLT) industry.
