Undergraduate entry requirements

The entry requirements for international students applying to any undergraduate hospitality courses at BMIHMS are as follows:

    • Applicants must have completed an international equivalent to the Australian Year 12 Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent as assessed by the Country Education Profiles produced by Australian Education International.
    • If an Australian Year 12 equivalent has not been completed, applicants with an equivalent Australian Year 11 and at least a Certificate IV qualification or a partially completed university degree may be considered.
    • Students must be 17 years and 9 months or older by the course start date
    • Must provide original certified copies of any academic and professional qualifications (including both original language and translated documents if applicant’s first language is not English).
    • All qualifications of international applicants will be verified in consultation with the Country Education Profiles produced by Australian Education International

For applicants who do not meet the above criteria, admission may be granted by the Dean Hospitality or nominee based on a documented assessment of the applicant’s overall ability to undertake the program of study and to achieve the course learning outcomes.

For Diploma applicants who do not meet the above criteria, admission may be granted based on broadly relevant work experience (documented e.g. CV) demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success, OR formal, informal or non-formal study, completed or partially completed, demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success, OR written submission to demonstrate reasonable prospect of success.

In addition, international applicants must:

  • Demonstrate a minimum level of English language competency of IELTS 6.0 (Academic), if applicant is from a country where English is not the first language.
  • Provide a valid International English Language Testing System (IELTS) certificate that is no more than two years old.

If an international student has met all other admission requirements but does not meet English language proficiency requirements, the student can be admitted to the English Language Program taught by the Academy of English (Blue Mountains). On completion of the course, students may automatically progress to the Undergraduate Bachelor of Business Degree Courses at BMIHMS.

Postgraduate entry requirements

The entry requirements for international students applying to the postgraduate International Hotel Management or Global Business Management degree programs is based upon previous academic performance and proficiency in the English language.

The criteria for entry is as follows:

  • Must be 21 years of age or over when starting a Masters’ degree, Graduate Certificate or Diploma.
  • Must have Completed a bachelor degree (or equivalent to AQF 7), or for international qualifications as recognised by the Country Education Profiles produced by Australian Education International.
  • Applicants with 3 years management / supervisory experience can also enter the Masters’ degree by successfully completing the Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma.
  • Original certified copies of all qualifications must be provided (including the original language and translated document if English is not the applicants first language).

For applicants who do not meet the above criteria, admission may be granted based on broadly relevant work experience (documented e.g. CV) demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success, OR formal, informal or non-formal study, completed or partially completed, demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success, OR written submission to demonstrate reasonable prospect of success.

In addition, international applicants must:

  • Demonstrate a minimum level of English language competency:
    • Master of International Hotel Management – IELTS of 6.0 (Academic) or equivalent, if applicant is from a country where English is not the first language.
    • Master of Global Business Management – IELTS of 6.5 (Academic) or equivalent, if applicant is from a country where English is not the first language.
  • Provide a valid International English Language Testing System (IELTS) certificate that is no more than two years old.

 Alternative Entry Requirements

Mature age entry:

Applicants who are over 21 at the time of application are entitled to mature age consideration.

Undergraduate program applicants may obtain entry by having at least three years work experience at a supervisory/management level as deemed relevant by the Head of School, Director of Academic Affairs or nominee and the English language proficiency required.

Postgraduate program applicants may obtain entry by having at least three years work experience at a supervisory/management level as deemed relevant by the Head of School, Director of Academic Affairs or nominee and the English language proficiency required. Applicants will be admitted into the Graduate Certificate program. When successfully completed, articulation into the Graduate Diploma or the Masters’ program will be granted.

Special needs/educationally disadvantaged students:

Under its educational equity program, the School may give special consideration for course admission to applicants who have suffered educational disadvantage. In particular, applicants with physical disabilities and applicants from geographically isolated areas or economically disadvantaged backgrounds may apply for special consideration. Applications will be assessed on prior academic achievements, any relevant work experience and a personal interview with the Head of School, Director of Academic Affairs or nominee.  For international applicants, English language proficiency requirements still apply.
