Undergraduate Entry Requirements

The entry requirements into our undergraduate hospitality courses at the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) are as follows: All applicants must:

    • Have completed an Australian Year 12 senior secondary school certificate or its approved international equivalent.
    • If 12 years of education has not been completed, applicants with an equivalent Australian Year 11 and at least a Certificate IV qualification or a partially completed university degree may be considered.
    • Be at least 18 years of age before the end of the first practical term.
    • Provide original certified copies of any academic and professional qualifications (including the original language and translated document if applicable).
    • All qualifications of international applicants will be verified in consultation with the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR).

For applicants who do not meet the above criteria, admission may be granted by the Head of School, Director of Academic Affairs or nominee based on a documented assessment of the applicant’s overall ability to undertake the program of study and to achieve the course learning outcomes.

In addition, international applicants must:

  • Students from countries where English is not the first language must demonstrate a minimum level of English language competency of IELTS 6.5 (General) or 6.0 (Academic) or equivalent. You can enter with IELTS 5.5 (Academic) or equivalent providing you study a minimum of two terms of Integrated English Support in conjunction with your program.
  • A valid International English Language Testing System (IELTS) certificate of not more than two years old must be provided. If an international student has met all other admission requirements but does not meet English language proficiency requirements, the student can be admitted to the English Language Program taught by the Academy of English (Blue Mountains). On completion of the course, students may automatically progress to the Undergraduate Bachelor of Business Degree Courses at the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School.

Postgraduate Entry Requirements

Entry into a postgraduate hospitality degree program or into a Postgraduate program of Global Business Management at the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School is based upon previous academic performance and proficiency in the English language. All applicants must:

    • Have completed a bachelor degree as recognised by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF 7). All international qualifications must be recognised by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR).
    • Original certified copies of all qualifications (including the original language and translated document if applicable).

In addition, international applicants must:

    • Have documented evidence of English language proficiency of IELTS 6.0 (Academic) or equivalent for Graduate Certificate or Master of International Hotel Management or IELTS 6.5 (Academic) or equivalent for Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Master of Global Business Management. Valid IELTS certificate of not more than two years must be provided.

Alternative Entry Requirements

  • Mature-age entry:

    Applicants who are over 21 at the time of application are entitled to mature-age consideration.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Undergraduate programs applicants may obtain entry by having at least three years work experience at a supervisory/management level as deemed relevant by the Head of School, Director of Academic Affairs or nominee and the English language proficiency required.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Postgraduate programs applicants may obtain entry by having at least three years work experience at a supervisory/management level as deemed relevant by the Head of School, Director of Academic Affairs or nominee and the English language proficiency required. Applicants will be admitted into the Graduate Certificate program. When successfully completed, articulation into the Graduate Diploma or the Master will be granted.

  • Special needs/educationally disadvantaged students:

    Under its educational equity program, the School may give special consideration for admission to courses to applicants who have suffered educational disadvantage. In particular, applicants with physical disabilities and applicants from geographically isolated areas or economically disadvantaged backgrounds may apply for special consideration. Applications will be assessed on prior academic achievements, any relevant work experience and a personal interview with the Head of School, Director of Academic Affairs or their nominee.  For international applicants English language proficiency requirements still apply.

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island applicants:

    Applicants of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island (ATSI) descent may apply for special consideration for admission to the School. Application for special consideration (ATSI) should be made in writing to the Admissions Manager.  Applications will be assessed on prior academic achievements, any relevant work experience and a personal interview with the Head of School, Director of Academic Affairs or their nominee.  ATSI applicants who do not request special consideration will be subject to the School’s standard entry requirements.
