If employability was one of her Hotel & Resort Management course objectives when she started her second industry placement at Melbourne’s Crown Towers, then Poppy Stamatellis would have topped the class.
As a second year student undertaking her second six-month Industry Placement, Poppy began working as a Front Office Attendant in one of Melbourne’s most prestigious properties earlier this year.
To begin her placement, Poppy spent an intensive three days in corporate training and then was shadowed for another four weeks in a buddy system before going out on her own.
For the remaining five months, Poppy was employed as a Front Office Attendant., with her key responsibilities included the checking-in and checking-out of guests. However -because the property is also situated in a casino – there are special guest accounts to settle on and financial responsibilities to follow up, often by phone or email. It is a position that requires someone particularly trustworthy.
Poppy’s time was shared amongst the Crown hotels. She was placed within Crown Towers however also had the opportunity to work shifts in Crown Metropol and Crown Promenade. Poppy experienced working with a variety of guests who stayed with Crown for gaming, leisure, city escapes and corporate travel.
Visitors to Crown during Poppy’s industry placement included contestants in the Australian Open, AFL players, Australian cricketers, Madonna and her entourage and the late great Prince.
“It’s really a different world,” said Poppy of the constant activity and industry she was experiencing everyday.
“It’s a lovely company to work for, it pays well and they really look after you. You are surrounded by opportunities and get exposure to everything.”
To her credit, this BMIHMS at Torrens University student now has a decision to make. With a keen desire to travel on graduation, she is now also contemplating undertaking a graduate management training program with the company that she has learned and experienced so much.
“Our Group Resorts Management Program gives those wishing to embark on their hospitality career a leading edge and amazing opportunity to learn from the best and work with one of the best resort companies in the world during an exciting time of growth” said Paula Ntalianis, Group Training Manager for Hotels, Food & Beverage.
“Crown joined the GPP Program last year and we are very excited to continue working closely with BMIHMS with 6 month placement, our Management Program and other vacancies.”
Poppy still has another term to decide her first career steps. We wish her luck in her endeavours . . . watch this space/GG
