Celebrating Community and Success at the BMIHMS Alumni Awards Night

The Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) has over 5500 outstanding graduates working in a variety of industries all over the world.

With such a huge global alumni network, it’s even more special on those occasions when everyone can come together.

Last month, BMHIMS held another long-awaited, annual Alumni Awards Night at L’Aqua Restaurant at Darling Harbour.

With the city lights sparkling just beyond the windows, staff, students and graduates gathered for champagne and speeches. It was a moment to reflect on all the significant achievements we’ve made as individuals, and as a community.

The evening was co-hosted by Tom Frawley – respected lecturer and graduate of 1993 – and Mandy Posetti – graduate 2007, Human Resources Manager, The Star Sydney and member of the BMIHMS Alumni Board. Awards were presented to the following recipients:

  • Nithiya Kala – Rising Star (Graduated 1-5 years ago)
  • Lauren Puttini – Making their Mark (Graduated 6-10 years ago)
  • Georgia Sutherland – Entrepreneurial / Business Success
  • Adam Sargeant – Social Responsibility
  • Justin King – BMIHMS Ambassador
  • Stephanie Tanpure – Hotelier of the Year
  • Betsy Westcott – Alumni of the Year

In addition, a number of graduates were added to the BMIHMS Honour Board which is a lifelong recognition of the significant career achievement and support of alumni who graduated over 20 years ago. This year we welcomed Tish Nyar, Christine Robson, Tash Tobias, Cameron Abbott and Fransiska Handoko.

Congratulations to all! Your hard work and ambition has paid off, and we at the BMIHMS community are so proud of your success.

Although the evening was overall a celebration, there was one poignant moment when it came time to remember the real founder of the Alumni community, who is no longer with us.

Long time beloved Alumni Ambassador, Mr Val Cook (former Lecturer, Head of Course, and Vice Principal) passed away last year, after dedicating 26 years to BMIHMS and its students.

As a special tribute to Mr Cook, a memorial portrait was unveiled and the inaugural recipient of the Val Cook Memorial Scholarship was announced: Ollyvia Bewert

Both these initiatives were crowd-funded by BMIHMS graduates from around the world. Together, the community raised over $11,000! The portrait will go on to hang in the foyer of the BMIHMS Leura Campus.

“Following the passing of Mr. Cook, there was an overwhelming response from graduates around the world who wanted to share their memories and show their appreciation for a man who made such an impact on their lives,” said Mr. Tish Nyar, graduate of 1993 and Chair of the BMIHMS Alumni Board, who presented the scholarship and the portrait.

It was a joyous evening, full of smiling faces, thanks, and old memories of school days recounted. The BMIHMS community truly came together to celebrate each other’s lives and achievements.
