BMIHMS Ranked #1 in Australia for Best Hospitality and Leisure Courses

If you’re looking for the best courses in Australia, in hospitality and hotel management, look no further. It’s now official: Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) is number one.

What exactly is the QS World University Rankings, and why is it important?

The QS World University Rankings is an annual publication that ranks the world’s universities across 48 different subject areas, 5 faculty areas, and the global overall.

The results of the rankings are listed on the QS Top Universities website, where you can browse the performance of the world’s universities each year, across: subject area, institution, location, and level of study.

The QS World University Rankings has been published since 2004, and is the most widely read university ranking in the world. It’s really important because it provides students with an independent, reliable system of assessment to help them choose the right institution for their education.

In a competitive environment where every institution is self-promoting, it’s critical that students to have access to independent information. QS provide that service.

 

How the QS ranking system works

QS has developed it’s own system of data collection and analysis, where data is pulled together from multiple sources, including: the universities themselves, government ministries, agencies such as HESA, web sources and other third parties.

Using this data, universities are assessed against 6 metrics:
1. Academic Reputation (40%)
Naturally, if you invest in a university course, you want to know that your university has a good reputation in the academic community.

This score is based off the QR Academic Survey, which collates the expert opinions of over 94,000 individuals in the higher education space, regarding teaching and research quality at the world’s universities. In doing so, it has grown to become the world’s largest survey of academic opinion.

 
2. Employer Reputation (10%)
Of course, students also want to study at an institution that has a reputation for excellence among potential employers, so they can gain an advantage in the job market.

The QS Employer Reputation metric is based on almost 45,000 responses to the QS Employer Survey. The survey asks employers to identify those institutions from which they source the most competent, innovative, effective graduates. The QS Employer Survey is also the world’s largest of its kind.

 
3. Faculty/Student Ratio (20%)
Student to teacher ration not demonstrates how much individual time a student receives in class, which impacts on the quality of their education. However, during their research QS has also found that, ‘measuring teacher/student ratios is the most effective proxy metric for teaching quality.’

 
4. Citations per faculty (20%)
Research output is another important measure of the quality of an institution. To calculate it, QR totals the number of citations received by all papers produced by faculty members of an institution across a five-year period.
 
5. International Faculty Ratio (5%)

It’s important to rank a university according to how international it is, in terms of staff and students, because according to QS, ‘a highly international university acquires and confers a number of advantages;  

  • It demonstrates an ability to attract faculty and students from across the world, which in turn suggests that it possesses a strong international brand.
  • It implies a highly global outlook: essentially for institutions operating in an internationalised higher education sector.
  • It also provides both students and staff alike with a multinational environment, facilitating exchange of best practices and beliefs.
  • In doing so, it provides students with international sympathies and global awareness: soft skills increasingly valuable to employers.’

 

Why did BMIHMS score so highly in the 2019 results?

According to the QS 6 criteria, BMIHMS came in at #1 in Australia because:
