The Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) at Torrens University will host the 12th Leadership Speaker Series (LSS) next week at its Town Hall Campus in Sydney.

The event, to be held on Friday 25 August from 2.30pm AEST, will feature prominent hotelier Lorraine Mercuri, General Manager of Mercure Sydney International Airport as the lead panelist.

Lorraine, a commercial manager with over 20 years experience in the hospitality and hotel industry all across Australia has an excellent record of achievement in hotel operations with varying degrees of complexity over a broad range of business units. This includes understanding the local micro and macro operating environment, and working with industry partners and government agencies to stimulate market growth. A blend of strong technical and interpersonal skills with a strategic outlook, forms the basis for her excellent leadership and sustainable business practices.

In recent years Lorraine has taken an entrepreneurial approach to her career by opening the Northbeach Pavillion and driving its strategic direction and overall business development since 2012. In 2016 Lorraine returned to hotels, and is currently the General Manager at Mercure Sydney International Airport. Harnessing her previous experience, she has overseen a significant change management project which repositioned the hotel within an ever evolving and growing marketplace. Her vision is to disrupt the hotel dining experience within the airport precinct, by creating ‘heart and soul’ dining.

Since 2014 the BMIHMS Leadership Speaker Series (LSS) has been creating panel discussions for BMIHMS students to learn and engage with those at the forefront of the hospitality industry. Classes currently studying management subjects such as leadership will attend, as well as students watching live from Leura Cmapus and across the globe via YouTube.

As the lead panelist, Lorraine will discuss her career experiences and current trends within the sector, while providing an open Q&A forum, giving students the chance to gain greater insight into possible future career paths from those leading the field. Anthony Mitri, Director of Industry, Innovation and Employability (Hospitality) will facilitate the discussion.

Previous panelists include world-renowned dynamic hotelier and restaurateur Loh Lik Peng, Founder and Director of the Unlisted Collection; Craig Hooley, General Manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney; and Rachel Argaman, CEO, TFE Hotels.

Jerome Casteigt, General Manager (Hospitality) for Laureate Australia & New Zealand, said:

“We introduced the LSS to ensure that our students were getting real exposure to the industry on a regular basis. Our learning model at BMIHMS is quite unique and comprises academic excellence, applied learning and industry experience. The LSS further extends the industry immersion element for our students, giving them greater access to networking and employment opportunities on graduation.”
